How To Increase Your Sales By Adding A Call To Action

A heavily used online marketing strategy, a call to action may seem simple at first, but its power of persuasion cannot be underestimated. It is basically a strongly worded suggestion that clearly marks out what you want the user to do. It is found in great many forms; all lucidly worded to form suggestions that a user will be tempted to click. They include “Click to subscribe!” and “Add to Your Shopping Cart.” Notice they are simple statements, usually requests, and the starting letter of every word is capitalized. These convey a sense of urgency and attractiveness to the user, and entice them to click on them, more so than any normal text does. Call To Action

To increase sales with a call to action is as simple as telling your users what you want them to do politely. They can be of all forms from getting more page views to lining up a sale. There are some tips to forming Calls to Actions that work and work well at that.


  1. Pique their interests : The call to action has to get the user’s attention and gently coax it into interest. This can be done by subtly offering the user a benefit by clicking the phrase, or by a few statements enticing the user.
  2. Don’t go overboard : There is a fine line between a suggestion and an order, and you want to strike the right balance between them. A good call to action will have an emphasis on the benefits it offers the user, some proof of credibility, and some way of building up the value of the offer. Bonuses are a good bet as well. However, do not push your users too hard, or they might get turned off. As with all marketing, use your best judgment.
  3. Don’t Be Coy: Many people make the mistake of believing that merely hinting at an action is better than saying it outright. This could not be further from the truth. In this age of quick decisions, a user could not be less bothered about reading deep into suggestions. A quick and outright statement is the best thing as it makes thing clear and simple for the user.
  4. Make it easy:  If you want signups for your site, put it directly on the home page and not on another page. This is just an example and not a rule, but it generally pays to make it as simple as possible. Also, make the call to action as risk free as possible, so the user won’t feel unnecessarily wary.
  5. Appearance: Possibly the factor that makes or breaks a good call to action, the appearance is to be carefully thought out. It should be as clean as possible. The buttons should be as big and visible as possible, but not so big as to dominate the page. Place it in an area where it is likely to be seen like the top right of the page, and a little to the right.

The importance of a call to action is sorely underestimated by many and underused in many situations where they would benefit both the host and the user. Colors of the Call to Action have to contrast the page and pop out as well as not being too gaudy. Orange and blue are good options, and red can be used for the most urgent calls of action.

    I truly believe Call To Actions should be polite and subtle.

    I utterly hate when people instill a sense that “if you do not check this out now, the world is going to end” bla bla bla.

    Great post. A lot of times we forget why it is we want traffic and readers?? We work with people on videos and video marketing and it always shocks me how many just want to bombard their viewers with info, hoping they will figure out what they (viewers) are suppose to do. People need to be told. Tell them what you want them to do! Cheers!
