No dealing with returns on physical goods. Just smart, scalable, repeatable income.

So when people ask me how to sell digital products on Etsy, I take that question seriously. Because this is not just something I talk about. It is something I live every day, and it is something I have helped over 16,000 students do for themselves.

I grew up in Chicago, and I built everything I have from scratch. Nobody handed me a blueprint. I figured it out through years of trial and error, and now I get to share what actually works so you do not have to spend years figuring it out on your own.

This guide is going to walk you through everything. What digital products are, why Etsy is one of the best platforms to start with, what sells, how to create your products, how to market them, and how to build a real business from this. Let us get into it.

What Are Digital Products? (And Why They Are Worth Your Time)

If you are new to this world, you might be wondering what is digital products selling all about and why everyone seems to be talking about it right now.

The digital products meaning is simple. A digital product is any product that exists in a digital format and can be delivered electronically. There is nothing physical to ship. The buyer pays, they download the file, and you have just made a sale without lifting a finger after the initial setup.

When people ask what is a digital products business, the answer is this: it is a business model where you create files, templates, guides, or tools once and sell them over and over again to an unlimited number of buyers. Your cost of goods is essentially zero after the initial creation. That is what makes it so powerful.

So what are digital products in practical terms? Here are some examples to give you a clear picture of what are some examples of digital products that people are buying right now:

  • Printable planners, journals, and calendars
  • Templates for Canva, PowerPoint, or Google Slides
  • Educational guides, ebooks, and workbooks
  • Clipart, illustrations, and graphic design elements
  • SVG files for Cricut and Silhouette cutting machines
  • Social media templates
  • Budget spreadsheets and trackers
  • Digital invitations and greeting cards
  • Stock photos and mockups
  • Fonts and design assets
  • Resume templates
  • Wedding stationery
  • Meal planning guides
  • Business plan templates

That is what digital products are at their core. Files that solve a problem, save someone time, or help them create something. And once you understand that, the possibilities for what you can create are genuinely endless.

Why Etsy Is One of the Best Places to Start Selling Digital Products

There are a lot of places online where you can sell digital products. You could build your own website, use Instagram, or explore other platforms. But when it comes to being a marketplace for digital products that already has built-in traffic and is designed for beginners, Etsy is hard to beat.

Here is why I recommend etsy for digital products, especially when you are just starting out:

Etsy already has millions of buyers actively searching for products every day. You are not starting from zero traffic. People open the Etsy app looking to buy. That is a massive advantage for someone who is just building their audience.

Setting up an etsy digital products shop is straightforward, even if you are not tech-savvy. The platform walks you through every step of the setup process.

Etsy handles the delivery automatically. When someone buys your digital product, Etsy sends them the download link. You do not have to do anything manually. That automation is what makes digital products on Etsy such a strong model for passive income.

The platform supports digital products natively, which means you do not need third-party tools or integrations to get started. Everything is built in.

The startup cost is low. You pay a small listing fee per item, which makes it one of the most affordable ways to test digital products ideas to sell before you invest a lot of time or money into a niche.

When I talk to students who are brand new, I always tell them this: Etsy is where you practice and prove your concept. Once you understand what works, you can expand from there. But do not skip this step. Etsy gives you access to real buyers right away, and that feedback is priceless for shaping your digital products business.

What Digital Products Sell Best on Etsy

This is one of the most common questions I get, and I love answering it because the data is clear. Let me break down what digital products sell the most on Etsy and what digital products are in demand right now.

Printables

This is the biggest and most consistent category on Etsy. Printable planners, habit trackers, meal prep sheets, budget binders, and wall art all perform extremely well year after year. Buyers love printables because they get instant access and can print from home. If you are wondering what digital products sell best on Etsy, start here.

Canva Templates

Templates designed in Canva are massive right now. Business owners, coaches, and content creators are constantly searching for social media templates, pitch deck templates, media kit templates, lead magnet templates, and more. If you know how to design in Canva, this category is a serious opportunity.

SVG Files and Clipart

Crafters who use cutting machines like Cricut are always buying SVG files. Clipart sets and watercolor illustration elements are also in high demand for designers who need commercial use graphics for their own projects.

Spreadsheets and Trackers

Budget trackers, expense sheets, business income trackers, and content calendars built in Google Sheets or Excel are quietly one of the top performing categories on Etsy. People pay real money for a well-built spreadsheet that saves them hours of setup time.

Educational Resources

Lesson plans, worksheets, study guides, and homeschool resources sell extremely well in the education space. Teachers and parents shop Etsy regularly for these exact products.

Resume and Business Templates

Job seekers and small business owners constantly need professional templates. Resume templates, cover letter templates, invoice templates, and proposal templates are consistently in demand.

When thinking about what digital products to sell, the best advice I can give you is to start with what you already know. What do people ask you for help with? What skills or knowledge do you have that others would pay to access faster? That intersection is where your best products live.

Digital Products Creation: How to Actually Make Your Products

Now let us talk about digital products creation, because this is where a lot of people freeze up. I promise it is more accessible than you think. You do not need to be a professional designer or have expensive software to get started.

Use Canva for Digital Products

Canva is my number one recommendation for beginners, and I say that with full confidence after years of watching students succeed with it. Using canva for digital products is one of the smartest moves you can make because it is free to start, beginner friendly, and produces professional-looking results.

The digital products canva workflow is simple. You design your product inside Canva, export it as a PDF or PNG depending on the product type, package it into a zip file if you have multiple files, and upload it directly to your Etsy listing. Etsy delivers it automatically when someone buys.

You can use digital products canva to create:

  • Printable planners and journals
  • Social media templates
  • Business cards and branding kits
  • Ebooks and workbooks
  • Wall art and home decor prints
  • Email newsletter templates
  • Proposal and pitch deck templates

Canva Pro is worth the investment once you start generating consistent sales, but you can absolutely begin with the free version. I have seen students go from idea to first sale in a single weekend using Canva and Etsy together. That is how accessible digital products creation has become.

Other Tools Worth Knowing

Beyond Canva, here are a few other tools depending on what type of digital products you are building:

  • Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel for spreadsheet-based products
  • Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer for SVG files and clipart (these have a learning curve but are powerful for design-heavy products)
  • Procreate on iPad for hand-drawn illustrations and watercolor clipart
  • Notion for productivity templates and planners
  • PowerPoint or Google Slides for presentation templates

The key is to pick one tool, learn it well, and create products consistently. Do not try to master every platform at once. Pick what fits the type of product you want to create, and go deep on it.

Step-by-Step: How to Open and Set Up Your Etsy Digital Products Store

This is the part where we get practical. Here is exactly how sell digital products on Etsy from scratch, starting from day one.

Step 1: Create Your Etsy Account and Open Your Shop

Go to Etsy.com and click “Sell on Etsy.” Follow the prompts to create your seller account. You will choose your shop name, set your location and currency, and verify your identity. Pick a shop name that reflects your niche or your overall brand. Keep it simple and easy to remember. You can always evolve your branding later, so do not let the perfect name stop you from starting.

Step 2: Set Up Your Shop Policies and About Section

Before you list a single product, fill out your About section and your shop policies. This matters more than most beginners realize. Buyers read these sections before purchasing, especially for first-time purchases from a new shop. Let people know who you are, what your digital products store is about, and what they can expect.

For digital products specifically, your policy should clearly state that all sales are final since digital items are instantly accessible after purchase. Also include information about how to access the files after purchase, and what to do if there are any technical issues.

Step 3: Create Your First Listing

This is where your digital products store comes to life. Here is what you need for a strong listing:

A great product title that includes the keywords your buyers are actually searching for. Think about how someone would type their search into Etsy and mirror that language naturally.

High-quality mockup images that show what the buyer will receive. Since you are selling digital products and not a physical item, the images are doing all the work of communicating what is in the file. Use mockups that make the product look real and tangible. Canva has mockup templates, and there are also sites like Placeit where you can create professional mockups quickly.

A detailed description that explains what the product is, what is included in the download, what file types are included, what software or tools the buyer needs to use it, and how to access it after purchase. The more information you provide, the more confident buyers will feel.

All 13 tags filled out using keyword phrases that describe your product. These tags are searchable, so do not waste them.

Your pricing set based on market research. Look at what similar products are selling for in your category.

The actual digital file uploaded directly inside the listing. Etsy allows you to upload files up to 20MB directly. For larger files, you can use Google Drive or Dropbox and include the link in a PDF that you upload to the listing.

Step 4: Price Your Products Strategically

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make when it comes to digital products sales is underpricing. Just because it is a digital file does not mean it should be cheap. Your time, creativity, and expertise went into making it. Most printables and templates on Etsy sell between $2.99 and $19.99. Higher-end template bundles and SVG sets can go for $25 to $50 or more.

Do not race to the bottom on price. Buyers on Etsy are not always looking for the cheapest option. They are looking for the right product. Price your work with confidence.

Step 5: Build Out Your Shop With Multiple Listings

One listing is a start, but a sustainable digital products business is built on volume. Aim to have at least 20 to 30 listings before you expect consistent daily sales. The more products you have, the more entry points buyers have into your shop. Each listing is essentially a new door that can lead someone to your store.

Think of it this way: if you have 5 listings, you have 5 chances to be found in Etsy search. If you have 50 listings, you have 50 chances. The math is simple, and consistency in adding new products is one of the most reliable ways to grow your digital products sales over time.

Step 6: Continuously Optimize

Once your listings are live, pay attention to your Etsy stats. Look at which listings are getting views, which are converting, and which are getting favorited but not purchased. Use that data to improve your weakest listings. Update your titles, improve your images, or adjust your pricing based on what you learn. Selling digital products on Etsy is an ongoing process of refinement, not a set-it-and-forget-it situation.

Digital Products Marketing: How to Get Consistent Traffic and Sale

Creating your products is only half of the equation. Digital products marketing is what brings in consistent, reliable sales over time. Here is what actually works.

Optimize Your Etsy SEO

Etsy is a search engine first. When someone types “printable budget tracker” or “Canva Instagram template” into the search bar, Etsy pulls up results based on how relevant and optimized your listing is. Use your most important keywords in your title, your listing description, and all 13 tags. Think about how your buyer would describe what they are looking for and use that exact language.

Long-tail keywords, meaning more specific multi-word phrases, often convert better than broad single words because they reflect buyer intent. “Printable weekly meal planner for family” is more targeted than just “planner,” and it will attract a more ready-to-buy customer.

Use Pinterest to Drive External Traffic

Pinterest is one of the most powerful free traffic sources for Etsy sellers. Create pins for each of your products and link them directly to your Etsy listings. Pinterest content has a long shelf life compared to most social media platforms. Pins you create today can continue driving traffic to your shop for months or even years. If you are serious about growing your digital products side hustle, Pinterest should be part of your strategy early on.

Build an Email List

I cannot stress this enough. Your email list is the one asset you truly own. Your Etsy shop can be shut down, your Instagram account can be disabled, but your email list is yours. Offer a free digital product as a lead magnet to get people onto your list, then nurture those subscribers consistently and let them know when you drop new products or have anything special going on. Email is consistently one of the highest-converting channels for digital products sales, and building it early gives you a major advantage as you grow.

Use Instagram and Short-Form Video

Show your process. Show the product in use. Share tips related to your niche. You do not have to be a content creation expert to build traction on Instagram. Consistency matters far more than perfection. Even a simple screen recording of you designing a product in Canva, or a before-and-after of a printable you created, can generate real interest and drive people to your shop.

Leverage YouTube

If you are comfortable on camera or with screen recordings, YouTube is one of the best long-term platforms for driving traffic to your digital products store. Tutorial content that naturally leads to your products is incredibly effective. Teaching someone how to use a type of template, then mentioning that you sell a done-for-you version in your shop, is a strategy that converts extremely well.

What Digital Products for Passive Income Actually Look Like in Practice

The phrase “passive income” gets used a lot online, but let me tell you what it actually looks like day to day.

Digital products for passive income does not mean you do zero work. It means you do the work once and get paid repeatedly over time. The income is passive in the sense that it is not tied to your hours. You are not trading time for money on each sale.

Here is a real example. You spend a weekend creating a 20-page printable budget planner in Canva. You write a strong listing, optimize your SEO, create good mockup images, and publish it. That listing now works for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Someone in another country finds it at 2 in the morning, purchases it, and receives it instantly. You wake up to a sale notification.

That is what digital products for passive income looks like in practice. And it compounds over time. As you add more products, your chances of making sales every single day increase. Some of my students have reached the point where they consistently make money while they sleep, take vacations, or spend time with their kids. That is the lifestyle this business model can create when you approach it with real strategy and consistency.

A Note on Digital Products With Resell Rights

You may have come across digital products with resell rights, or searched for where to buy digital products to resell. This is where you purchase a done-for-you product that comes with a license allowing you to resell it to your own customers.

My honest take on digital products resell rights is this: I am not a fan of the Master Resell Rights model, and I actively steer my students away from building their entire business on it.

Here is why. If you are selling the same product as thousands of other people, you are competing purely on price. There is no differentiation. Your brand has no real value because you did not create anything original. The market gets saturated fast, and the race to the bottom on pricing is brutal.

I understand the appeal. The question of where to buy digital products to resell comes from a real place of wanting to get started quickly. But the shortcut often costs more in the long run because you are building on a foundation that is not yours.

Create your own products. It takes more time upfront, but what you build is actually yours. Your brand, your reputation, your audience. That is worth far more than a collection of resell rights products.

That said, if you do explore digital products with resell rights, read every license carefully. Make sure you understand what you can and cannot do, and confirm that the platform you plan to sell on allows it.

Are Digital Products Taxed?

Yes, and this is something you need to understand as you build your business. Are digital products taxed? In many cases, absolutely yes.

In the United States, Etsy collects and remits sales tax on digital products for most states automatically. So as a US-based seller, Etsy handles a lot of the collection for you. But you are still responsible for reporting your business income and paying federal and state income taxes on your earnings.

For digital products international sales, the rules get more complex. The EU, UK, Canada, and Australia all have their own VAT and GST rules for digital goods sold across borders. Etsy handles the collection of these taxes in many cases, but the specifics can vary. Work with an accountant who understands e-commerce so you know exactly what your obligations are.

Do not let the tax question scare you out of starting. Just educate yourself early, keep good records of your income, and set aside a percentage of your earnings for tax time. Running a legitimate digital products business means treating it like a real business from day one.

Digital Products as a Side Hustle and Small Business

One of the things I love most about this model is how genuinely accessible it is. You do not need a business degree, a big budget, or a team to get started. This is a real digital products side hustle that can eventually become your main source of income.

Digital products for small business owners is also an incredible opportunity that often gets overlooked. If you already run a service-based business, a physical product shop, or even a local business, adding digital products can create a revenue stream that works even when you are not actively working.

If you are a graphic designer, create template packs. If you are a nutritionist, create meal planning guides. If you are a photographer, create Lightroom presets. If you are an organizer, create printable systems and checklists. The digital products ideas to sell are often already inside what you know how to do. You just need to package them.

This is exactly what makes digital products for small business such a smart strategy. You take your existing expertise and turn it into a product that can be sold to an unlimited number of people without requiring additional time from you on each sale. That is leverage, and that is what builds real wealth over time.

Where Else Can You Sell Digital Products?

This guide is focused on digital products on Etsy, but I want you to know that Etsy is not the only option available to you. The question of where to sell digital products for free or outside of Etsy is one worth exploring as your business grows.

Gumroad lets you sell digital downloads directly to your audience. It is free to start and works well once you have your own following.

Payhip is another platform for selling digital products with no monthly fees and a simple setup process.

Creative Market is excellent for design assets, templates, fonts, and graphics. The audience there is specifically designers and creators.

Your own website gives you full control over your brand, your customer relationships, and your margins. Once you have validated your products and know what sells, moving toward your own digital products store through a platform like Shopify or WooCommerce is a smart long-term move.

Think of Etsy as your launchpad, not your ceiling. It is where you learn the market, test your products, and build your first sales. Once you have momentum, you expand.
